I’M SHANNON WHITE

Owner and Founder of Functional Spaces

One might say Functional Spaces was born out of necessity.

Years ago I chose to be a stay-at-home, homeschooling mother.  There were many days I questioned both my choice and my sanity. With a husband who traveled frequently for work, five messy creative children, and a menagerie of animals, I soon found myself drowning in paperwork, possessions, and responsibilities. I needed simplicity and organization in our home so that it functioned for both the lifestyle we chose and the season of life we were experiencing.

Through much trial and error and with an abundance of prayer, I developed ideas and systems that kept our home a center for creativity but also a refuge of peace for our growing family. Over the years I refined and expanded my systems to accommodate each new stage - from raising kids to becoming an empty nester with grandkids. It was during this last stage that I began organizing other spaces for friends and family. Until one day, one of those grown-up creative kids said, “Mom. You should start your own company.” And so I did.

I learned a lot over the last 30 years about what worked and what did not and sharing that experience with you is my passion. I love teaching others how a little simplifying, combined with the right organizational tool and just a touch of personalized styling will completely transform a place of frustration into a beautiful, functional space. Together, we will return your home to a place of peace and productivity where you and your family love gathering together - no matter the season of life.  Whether you’re a young adult starting out, a newlywed couple blending households, a parent overwhelmed with juggling everything, or the empty nester considering downsizing - I’ve been there and I can help.

GET TO KNOW ME A LITTLE BETTER

My driver’s license says I’m five feet .. which may or may not be a tiny exaggeration.

I love labels. Anyone who has been in my home can attest to this fact.

One of my favorite organizing tools is a lazy susan.

One year my responsibilities included 7 homeschooled kids, 40 laying hens, 5 cats, 4 cows, 3 dogs, 2 horses, 1 gecko, and 1 rescued baby squirrel. Organization is how I survived.

I color-coded each of my children from birth and they still use those colors as adults.

Organizing is my preferred method for dealing with stress.
